Do I Need An Antivirus With Windows 10?

All operating systems from Windows 95 through Windows 7 did not have a good built in anti-virus protection. Back in those days, most people would reach for Norton, McAfee, Bit Defender or some other paid solution. The truth is that some of these products were doing more harm than good, especially when they issued a bad update signature that actually could fry your computer. The problem with most of these programs is that they try to pack way too much into the software package.

They offer many items that have nothing to do with catching a virus. The end result is a slow running computer. Many will include an updater for your drivers. Generally speaking, it is best to leave your drivers alone if everything is working as it should. There are certain instances where updating a driver may prove to be beneficial. If everything is running smooth, leave it alone. Windows 10 will offer driver updates for some of your common pieces of hardware automatically.

Back in the day when Windows Defender was called Security Essentials, the antivirus left much to be desired. The software would miss plenty of malware and just did not do a great job of protecting your system. Today, Windows Defender is a whole new animal. In recent lab tests, Windows Defender has proven to be an excellent product with great test scores. Unlike other virus products, Defender does not have to be installed in your system. It is already there. So when the sales person gives you his sales pitch and insists you need an expensive paid antivirus, simply say no since all it is all a sales pitch to make more money. If you really want a different solution, I recommend Panda Dome (free version) as it also is an excellent solution that is free and will not slow you down.

Not only does Windows Defender have all the common scans like quick scan and full scan, but it also has an online scan that runs after you reboot your computer and before Windows loads. This can help remove stubborn malware that just will not go away while you are in Windows. I have seen Defender save many folks from Trojans that are responsible for ransomware and other serious bugs. In fact, it got an AAA rating at the latest SE Labs testing. Very impressive indeed.

Most new systems will come with a trial version of an antivirus program such as McAfee. The company pays the computer vender to put these programs in to defray the cost of the computer. I remove those trials immediately when I get the computer home. This is all part of our tune up process. In addition to antivirus, when we use our professional scanning software, we often find malware hidden in brand new computers. We remove all the bad stuff before proceeding with the Windows speed tweaks and other set up procedures. The only paid addition that we recommend to add to your system is Malwarebytes. It plays well with all other Antivirus programs.

So the next time you buy a new computer, we recommend you stay away from all the add on fluff. Not only is it not needed, it will drain your wallet of hard earned money. They will try to sell you everything under the sun, trust me. Just say no! Tell them all you want is a computer. We give this advice to all our customers as well. For the most part, I have found extended warranties to be useless. In all my days, I have never actually used an extended warranty on anything. The one time I did with a printer and they said "that item is not covered". That was my last extended warranty I ever bought.
